Two people were taken to hospital, one later transferred to a Toronto burn unit, after a kitchen fire broke out in an Owen Sound, Ontario apartment on Wednesday night. The fire occurred in a building on 4th Ave E near St. Mary’s Hill.
Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services responded along with Owen Sound Police and Grey County Paramedic Services after reports of smoke coming from a unit. Eleven firefighters responded. By the time crews arrived, the fire was already out, but the apartment was full of smoke. Crews ventilated the unit and helped paramedics treat the two occupants at the scene before they were taken to hospital. Both had suffered burn injuries. One was later released; the other was transferred to a Toronto hospital’s burn unit for specialized care.
Fire officials estimated damage to the unit at around $10,000 and determined the cause was unattended cooking.
