A grease fire in a first-floor kitchen sent firefighters to Teal Run Apartments on Horizon Drive in Battle Creek, Michigan on Sunday afternoon. Crews responded just after 3 p.m. and arrived to find heavy black smoke pouring from the unit.
The fire was under control within 10 minutes. No injuries were reported. The unit where the fire started sustained extensive fire damage, and several neighboring apartments suffered smoke and water damage as a result. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents while repairs are made. The fire has been ruled accidental.
Grease fires are among the most common kitchen fire causes and among the fastest to get out of hand. This one was contained quickly, but the damage to surrounding units is a reminder of how a single kitchen incident in a multifamily building rarely stays a single-unit problem.
