A kitchen fire caused extensive damage to an apartment unit in Bath Township, Ohio, after spreading into the attic just after 8:30 p.m. on May 18. The Bath Township Fire Department responded to the Hampton Greene Apartments on South Mumaugh Road after reports of heavy smoke coming from Building 8, Unit 1.
Firefighters arrived to find the fire had started in the kitchen and extended into the attic space above the unit. Crews brought the fire under control within about ten minutes. The occupant was not home at the time. The other three apartments in the building were undamaged, but the unit where the fire started suffered extensive heat, smoke, and water damage throughout. No injuries were reported. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at around $150,000.
Kitchen fires that spread upward into shared attic spaces are a particular risk in multi-unit buildings, where one unit’s fire can put neighboring apartments at risk even when the flames don’t reach them directly.
