A second-floor apartment fire in Topeka, Kansas left one person with minor injuries Monday evening. The Topeka Fire Department responded to a unit at 1175 SW Woodhull Street around 6 p.m. on June 15 after reports of smoke.
Firefighters arriving on scene found smoke coming from the second-floor apartment. Inside, they found one occupant and a small fire burning on the stove. Crews extinguished the fire quickly, containing it to the area where it started. The occupant was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries from smoke inhalation. A secondary search confirmed the unit was clear.
Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking. They also reported that the smoke detectors in the unit were not working.
